Spain Details of Online Gambling Licenses
Spain Details of Online Gambling Licenses By: Joan Peppin, Friday June 8th 20120 Comments   Email   PrintSome of the leading online gambling operators had already issued press advisories stating that they had received gaming licenses from the regulator in Spain. However, that was just the tip of the iceberg. The online gambling industry was interested in the complete details of what is being perceived as the most important event since the Italian market was regulated. Therefore the Spanish Ministry of the Interior issued an advisory giving the break up of the licenses awarded. The statement revealed that the Spanish regulator had issued 277 licenses to 53 online gaming companies till date. Of these, 91 were general licenses and 186 were unique licenses. 3 general license and 5 unique license applications submitted by two companies are pending. 2 license applications have been rejected. Details were not provided for the pending and rejected applications. Of the 186 unique licenses issued, 27 pertain to online poker, 26 to online bingo, 31 to online roulette, 19 to the point and bank, 28 to online blackjack, 7 for additional games, 8 to horse racing, 17 to sports betting, 4 to mutual horse racing, 1 to mutual sports betting and 9 to others. In a departure from other national regulators, Spain has broken down online casino licenses by games. 26 licenses were issued to experienced gaming operators and 27 licenses to new market entrants. The Spanish Ministry took the opportunity to warn errant operators that they would face severe penalties if they illegally participated in the new market. The penalties could be as high as €50 million and in addition the online gambling web sites would be shut down. Finance Secretary of State, Michael Ferre, and the Director General of Game Planning, Enrique Alejo said that though the licensed operators could go live from June 5, they would have to ensure technical compliance and obtain systems approvals within six months. Responsible gambling will be a focus issue of the Spanish online gambling market. The General Planning Directorate General has launched a “Play Safe” campaign to emphasize this. Bettors and gamblers have been asked to ensure that their chosen operators display the “Play Safe” logo on their web sites. An official advertising Code of Conduct is in the process of being finalized and will be released later this week. Advertising by licensed online gambling operators will be permitted, subject to following the code. Revenues earned from the newly legislated online gambling sector will be ploughed back into public funds and social activities. An announcement from Betfair that it had obtained a Spanish online gambling license was the other related big news. The license covered sports book and casino products. Betfair said it had reached a €10 million settlement with Spanish authorities in order to get the license. The key financial figures for Q1 of 2012 are given below. The increases and decreases stated are in comparison with the performance in Q4 of 2011. The gross income was up 13% to €88.4 million. The total revenues were up 8% to €75.1 million. The breakup of the performance by product verticals was as follows. Online casino revenues were up 5% to €34.5 million. Share of profit in William Hill Online was up 51% to €13.3 million. If the performance is compared with Q1 of 2011, then in most sectors the increase is phenomenal because of the continuous quarterly growth registered by Playtech in 2011. The Playtech management has stated that the performance in the first 31 days of Q2 of this year is marginally better compared to the first quarter. Of more interest to players at Playtech online casinos is the status of the projects the software provider is involved in. The outstanding performance of the services division was based on organic growth and a new agreement with an existing licensee to provide marketing consultancy and operational services for the Asian market. The details were not provided. The integration and fruition from the Geneity, Mobenga and Ash Gaming acquisitions are ahead of expectations. The Gauselmann joint venture, in which Playtech is partnering with Merkur Interactive GmbH, is in an advanced stage for the start of online gaming operations focused on the German market. Playtech licensed online casinos, including Bet365, Betsson, Sportingbet, and Unibet, have launched in the newly regulated Danish market. Several licensees are getting ready for launch in Spain when the new regulations go into effect in the second half of this year. Boyles online casino was successfully launched on the Playtech platform in February 2012. The Gala Coral launch on the Playtech platform with verticals like online casino, bingo, poker and mobile sports is at an advanced stage. The most interesting news is that Playtech has signed an agreement with Freemantle to launch branded online slots based on reality shows like Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor. This will add to the fantastic range of branded slots that Playtech currently offers. Certain other news items were reconfirmed in the quarterly statement released. One was the software licensing agreement with Caliente, Mexico’s largest land-based gaming operator. The other was entry into the social gaming sector. The statement said, “Playtech remains committed and excited about the prospects for the impact of entering into the social gaming arena and believes it will aid the company’s growth in the future.” News Item Tools  Email     Print     Digg     Del.icio.us    StumbleUpon Comments  Add Comment Add Comment You must be signed-in to add a comment: – Sign-in – Register More News Bodog Casino Treasure Island Online SlotGolden Palace Online South African WinnersPlaytech Starts 2012 On Strong NoteOnline Gambling Entrepreneurs Rich ListBodog Casino Unveils Ares Online Slot
